Lewy Body Dementia Featured on Newstalk’s Show Me the Science, Luke O’Neill’s podcast

We were delighted to see Lewy body dementia highlighted on Newstalk’s Show Me the Science podcast, hosted by Luke O’Neill, helping to bring national attention to this often under-recognised condition.

In the episode, The Science of Lewy Body Dementia, Professor O’Neill explores the biology behind the condition, explaining how abnormal protein deposits, known as Lewy bodies, build up in the brain and contribute to symptoms. He also discusses how Lewy body dementia differs from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and why it remains underdiagnosed despite affecting thousands of people in Ireland. 

Importantly, the episode was prompted by a listener request from our PPI Chair, Eben Stewart, ahead of World Lewy Body Dementia Day, highlighting the powerful role of lived experience in shaping public awareness and scientific conversation. 

This feature offered a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of Lewy body dementia among a wide audience, while also promoting EMERALD-Lewy’s open day for World Lewy Body Dementia Day. Platforms like this play a crucial role in making complex science accessible and in amplifying the voices and experiences of those affected.
